Getting married in Upstate New York means you have four genuinely distinct seasons to choose from, and each one changes the whole feel of your day, from the light in your photos to the flowers on your tables to what your guests will need to wear.

What Is the Best Month to Get Married in Upstate NY?
If we had to pick the two most popular windows, we’d say early June and late September into early October. Both offer comfortable temperatures, manageable humidity, and gorgeous natural backdrops without the extremes of full summer heat or deep winter cold. But popular doesn’t always mean best for you, so here’s what each season actually looks like on the ground.
Spring Weddings
Spring in Upstate NY is beautiful, but it’s also the most unpredictable season we work in. We’ve photographed weddings with cherry blossoms and 70 degree sunshine, and we’ve photographed weddings with a surprise flurry of snow in the same week. If you love soft, romantic light and don’t mind planning a backup for rain, late April through early June can be stunning, especially if you’re drawn to garden or orchard style venues.
Summer Weddings
Summer is peak wedding season here for a reason. July and August bring long daylight hours, lush greenery, and warm evenings that are perfect for an outdoor reception. The tradeoff is that summer is also the most in-demand and often the most expensive time to book, so if you want a summer date, we always recommend locking in your venue and vendors at least a year out.
Fall Weddings
Fall is the season we get the most requests for, and it’s easy to see why. September and October bring crisp air, warm golden light, and some of the most dramatic foliage in the country. The catch is that fall books up fast, sometimes more than a year in advance, and pricing tends to stay firm since demand is so high.
Upstate New York Winter Weddings
Winter weddings don’t get talked about enough, and we think that’s a shame. Upstate New York winter scenery, especially with a fresh snowfall, creates a dramatic, almost cinematic backdrop that you simply can’t get any other time of year. Beyond the aesthetic, winter dates tend to come with real practical perks: lower venue and vendor pricing, more availability, and if you’re getting married around the holidays, many venues already have gorgeous seasonal decor in place. The main thing to plan around is shorter daylight hours and the need for a solid indoor backup for your ceremony.
When Can You Get Married in New York?
Once you’ve settled on a season, the next question is usually about timing and paperwork. In New York State, you and your partner need to apply for a marriage license together in person, and there’s a mandatory 24-hour waiting period after the license is issued before your ceremony can legally take place.
